Outpatient Department, India
Purulia / India
Why we are working on this project
Purulia Leprosy Hospital was established in 1888 and is the oldest and largest leprosy hospital in India. Up to 300 patients a day were coming through the doors of its Outpatient Department, in need of treatment and support. Staff were determined not to turn anyone away, but the patient numbers were putting a huge strain on the facilities which were out-of-date and overcrowded.
Thanks to our exemplary track record in delivering healthcare projects to the required standards, and consulting with local partners and communities during project design, we were asked by The Leprosy Mission of England & Wales, and The Leprosy Mission Trust India, to design and deliver a new Outpatient Department as well as dedicated facilities for staff training and community-based rehabilitation.
The design
The design uses low-cost and low-maintenance materials matched to the project budget, building needs and local skills and products available. At the hottest times of year, temperatures in Purulia can reach up to 45 degrees, making it crucial for the buildings to have natural cooling incorporated into the design. This was done through shading and directed cross-ventilation in all parts of the new building. The long roof overhangs also protect the internal spaces and patients from sun, whilst high-level vents allow for natural air flow throughout.
The delivery
The new Outpatient Department was completed in 2019 and leaves medical staff far better equipped to treat the 50,000 patients who access it every year.
The space transformed patient and staff experiences by offering them a comfortable, cool and light space to attend and work in.
The hospital’s Superintendent, Dr Ujjwal Hembrom, said: “The reputation of Purulia extends far beyond West Bengal state. It is known for being a refuge and a place where every patient is given quality medical care and treated with dignity.”
