Clinic for Children with Cleft Palate and Cleft Lip, Morocco
Marrakesh / Morocco
Why we are working on this project
For over 40 years, the international foundation Operation Smile has pioneered operations for cleft lip and cleft palate, as well as before- and after-care, across the globe. They fulfil a vital need in treating babies, children and adults with this condition, as well as educating families, medics and communities.
Operation Smile Morocco currently operates from three care centres in Casablanca, El Jadida and Oujda - all of which serve the northern regions of Morocco. A further clinic in Marrakesh will ensure that children in the southern and central areas of Morocco have access to the same comprehensive treatment that is needed to fully correct cleft conditions and help patients thrive.
Article 25 have partnered with Operation Smile for many years, and thanks to our experience in clinics and hospitals, as well as knowhow in designing and constructing buildings that work with the local climate, we can create the right conditions for Operation Smile’s important work.
The design
The design of this clinic emphasises natural light and good ventilation, creating bright and comfortable spaces for patients and families, which include a family waiting room and prayer room.
The medical and dental facilities follow the strict medical standards and requirements needed to create specialist care spaces, laboratories and dental operatories. Windows and doors have been carefully designed to keep out dust, while letting in light and air.
Construction is due to begin in 2024.
The impact
When completed, the clinic will provide outpatient treatment for people in central and southern parts of Morocco. Children and adults with cleft palate or cleft lip conditions will benefit from medical support which will help them to heal, stay healthy and integrate into society without stigma. The work Operation Smile Morocco’s doctors and nurses will do at the Marrakesh clinic will change the lives of these children and adults.
Operation Smile Morocco will also use this centre to educate local communities on cleft conditions, helping to reduce negative opinions and to encourage families to seek treatment. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this project will have on hundreds of families every year in Marrakesh and the surrounding areas.
